WDM是將一系列載有信息、但波長(cháng)不同的光信號合成一束,沿著(zhù)單根光纖傳輸;在接收端再用某種方法,將各個(gè)不同波長(cháng)的光信號分開(kāi)的通信技術(shù)。這種技術(shù)可以同時(shí)在一根光纖上傳輸多路信號,每一路信號都由某種特定波長(cháng)的光來(lái)傳送,這就是一個(gè)波長(cháng)信道。
在同一根光纖中同時(shí)讓兩個(gè)或兩個(gè)以上的光波長(cháng)信號通過(guò)不同光信道各自傳輸信息,稱(chēng)為光波分復用技術(shù),簡(jiǎn)稱(chēng)WDM。光波分復用包括頻分復用和波分復用。光頻分復用(frequency-division multiplexing,FDM)技術(shù)和光波分復用(WDM)技術(shù)無(wú)明顯區別,因為光波是電磁波的一部分,光的頻率與波長(cháng)具有單一對應關(guān)系。通常也可以這樣理解,光頻分復用指光頻率的細分,光信道非常密集。光波分復用指光頻率的粗分,光信道相隔較遠,甚至處于光纖不同窗口。
光波分復用一般應用波長(cháng)分割復用器和解復用器(也稱(chēng)合波/分波器)分別置于光纖兩端,實(shí)現不同光波的耦合與分離。這兩個(gè)器件的原理是相同的。光波分復用器的主要類(lèi)型有熔融拉錐型,介質(zhì)膜型,光柵型和平面型四種。其主要特性指標為插入損耗和隔離度。通常,由于光鏈路中使用波分復用設備后,光鏈路損耗的增加量稱(chēng)為波分復用的插入損耗。當波長(cháng)11,l2通過(guò)同一光纖傳送時(shí),在與分波器中輸入端l2的功率與11輸出端光纖中混入的功率之間的差值稱(chēng)為隔離度。
現在市場(chǎng)使用WDM技術(shù)的產(chǎn)品主要有CWDM和DWDM。

CWDM是一種支持多協(xié)議傳送的波分復用技術(shù)。CWDM系統利用復用器將不同波長(cháng)承載的光信號復用至單根光纖進(jìn)行傳輸,在鏈路的接收端,借助解復用器將分解后的波長(cháng)送給不同的光纖,連接到相應的接收設備。CWDM信道間隔通常比DWDM寬得多, 為區別起見(jiàn), 故稱(chēng)其為粗波分復用。
